The Fire Flower Series explores the fragility and resilience of porcelain. By subjecting delicate materials to the extreme process of Raku firing, sculptural flowers are reborn as eternal relics. The inherent risk of failure adds to the preciousness of the artifacts that endure, emerging from intense heat. There is poetry in the language of flowers—symbols of fleeting beauty transformed into timeless treasures when strengthened by fire. The work reflects the strength and vulnerability within the human spirit, reflecting our propensity to flourish amidst intense trials.

Shell Flowers were an unexpected discovery born through experimental layering of clear crackle Raku glaze beneath underglaze. In ancient customs, shells were valued for ornamental beauty and traded for their durability and difficulty to counterfeit. Flowers such as saffron and rare tulip varieties have historically functioned as status symbols or stores of value; often being substituted for monetary
payment in ceremonial exchanges. Noticing the visual and symbolic parallels between petals and
shells, I explored the idea of flowers as a form of social currency. If beauty is a valuable commodity
today, then flowers are an asset whose value depends on this collective belief that beauty, however fleeting, holds immense value and is a gift to be shared and cherished. The Shell Flowers series has me contemplating questions like: “Is it helpful, or ethical, to counterfeit nature?” and “ What are the ramifications of imposing monetary value on natural resources?”

Collaborations with Nature were inspired by the Southern Magnolia tree outside my bedroom window.
Witnessing it progress through the seasons, I was compelled to capture the phases these woody
branches partake in to produce the iconic and fragrant magnolia flower. The challenge was to replicate nature; seamlessly merging dried specimens and natural components with my porcelain recreations. The goal was not photo-realistic recreation, but artistic representation. I enjoyed the variations and inherent imperfections that occurred when translating these flowers into the media of porcelain. As in nature, no two wallflowers are identical.

This collaboration invited me to slow down and look at the world around me with the eyes of a student; appreciating the details of this astonishing two story tree that greets me when I rise each morning and retire at night. Only by mindfully taking a few moments to examine this tree as I walked past to take out the trash or fetch the kids from the bus stop was I able to discover that the pods come before the buds and slowly dry on the branches, eventually dropping after the bloom fades. I would have missed the fuzzy heart-shaped jacket that bursts open mid-bloom had I not assigned myself this collaboration. Studying nature with the intention to replicate its complexity filled me with reverence for the care and detail inherent in creation.

The English Garden Series of Wallflowers is a statement of beauty as an act of defiance- an exploration of how cottage garden flowers, while seemingly superfluous, reflect a strong conviction that beauty for the sake of beauty matters. True to the spirit of Vanitas Painting, flowers that are here today and gone tomorrow remain fragrant and flawlessly detailed even in the most remote and hidden places. If flowers rest assured of their purpose and indifferent of their audience, might I, too, possess the courage to shine in my truest form despite the weather or circumstances? Flowers are an inspiration to me-unburdened by worry of mortality or provision, clothed in a beauty that surpasses human wealth and status.

I believe that art is an integral part of everyday life, meant to be experienced on an intimate level. Each of my designs is an opportunity to create an immersive experience for the viewer, often accomplished by incorporating custom paintings, textile art, and ceramic installations unique to each project. In the same way, I consider all five senses of the viewer when conceptualizing a fine art piece or installation. The way the light plays off of a sculptural object and where the shadows fall on the blank wall is just as important as the pieces themselves.
